In 2008 several individuals decided to bring summer college baseball to Rockbridge County. Establishing a partnership with Washington and Lee University, enlisting the support of local businesses, families and volunteers, and joining the very competitive Valley Baseball League, the group recruited coaches, players, and staffers, and began play in 2009.
The Rockbridge Rapids baseball team has been a community treasure for five seasons. A summer evening at a home game at Capín Dick Smith Field has been described as a Norman Rockwell painting. The program has had many successes both on and off the ball field.
Rockbridge Community Baseball, Inc., a non-profit 501c 3 charitable organization, has operated the team in a professional manner. As with many non-profits, success depends on the generosity of businesses, private citizens, and the commitment of long hours by dedicated volunteers. Over the past five years, operating expenses have increased while financial resources have declined. For the past two years we relied heavily on the financial support of the Booster Club. Running the Rapids is a year round operation and the number of volunteers available to assist then, as well as for forty-four games during the summer, has lessened.
Following thoughtful and realistic analysis, Rockbridge Community Baseball, Inc., has decided not to field a team in the Valley Baseball League in 2014. It would be impossible to deliver a quality product for the community. Rockbridge Community Baseball, Inc. has an outstanding reputation and is leaving the Valley Baseball League on positive terms.
Many thanks to Washington and Lee University, Host Families, coaches, players, Booster Club members, local businesses, community service organizations, volunteers, and fans of all ages. It is with deep regret that Rockbridge Community Baseball, Inc. has made this difficult decision.
